Tamil Nadu's Jallikattu Begins with Exciting Prizes for Participants

Just as Sankranti is celebrated with fervor in the Telugu-speaking states, Pongal holds similar significance in Tamil Nadu. While cockfighting is a traditional practice during Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu has its own unique cultural spectacle—Jallikattu, a daring sport where men compete to tame bulls. This event holds a special place in Tamil Nadu's rich cultural and traditional heritage, especially during the Pongal festival.

Today, in celebration of Pongal, Jallikattu competitions have commenced across Tamil Nadu. Among all the events, the Jallikattu competition held in Avaniapuram, Madurai district, is globally renowned. For this year’s event in Avaniapuram, a total of 1,100 bulls have been prepared, and 900 participants have registered to take on the challenge of taming these well-trained bulls.

Exciting prizes have been announced for the winners. A tractor worth ₹11 lakh will be awarded to the owner of the bull that remains untamed throughout the competition. Additionally, the warrior who successfully tames a bull and emerges victorious will be rewarded with a car worth ₹8 lakh.
