Dedication Beyond Health: When Manmohan Singh Atended Rajya Sabha in a Wheelchair Despite Illness
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday night after prolonged illness, was a stalwart who set an example of unwavering commitment to his duties. A notable incident from 2023 stands as a testament to his dedication.
On August 7, 2023, the central Modi government introduced the Delhi Services Bill, which faced strong opposition from the Aam Aadmi Party and other opposition parties. They alleged the bill aimed to curtail the powers of the Delhi government and demanded a vote on it.
At the time, Manmohan Singh, despite his frail health and inability to walk, arrived at the Rajya Sabha in a wheelchair to cast his vote against the bill. His participation aligned with the INDIA coalition's call to oppose the bill. Although it was evident that the BJP-led NDA held a majority in the Rajya Sabha, making his vote unlikely to change the outcome, Singh’s decision to attend underscored his sense of responsibility.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged this gesture in the Rajya Sabha, lauding Manmohan Singh’s commitment. “Despite knowing that the government's stance would prevail, he came to vote, setting an example for all members. We pray for his recovery so he can continue to inspire us,” Modi remarked.
