JP Shares Personal Insights About His Family and Early Life

Jayaprakash Narayan, commonly known as JP, is a well-known figure in the Telugu states. After making his mark as an IAS officer, he entered politics by founding the Lok Satta party. JP’s political style has always been distinct from the current political landscape, which may explain why he has not been very active in recent politics. In a recent interview, Jayaprakash Narayan shared some intriguing details about his life.
Jayaprakash Narayan recalled that although he was born in Andhra Pradesh, he spent part of his childhood in Maharashtra. He mentioned that he was later sent to stay with his grandmother in Andhra Pradesh.
“My father, Venkateswara Rao, worked in the railways. I was born in a hospital in Vijayawada. It was a difficult delivery for my mother at the time. I was the eldest child. After me, I had two younger brothers and a younger sister, but my sister passed away when she was very young. I don’t remember her exact age, but she died of dehydration and diarrhea before turning three. Her name was Rani, and while I vaguely remember her face, it is not very clear,” he said.
He added that one of his brothers retired from railway service, while another practices as a lawyer in Hyderabad.
“I was quite chubby as a child. Back then, we didn’t have many mirrors or photographs, so I wasn’t very conscious of it. We used to eat a lot of Curd, Boorelu, Garelu etc. I didn’t participate much in sports. If you look at my old school records, I topped all the exams but was always at the bottom in sports,” he shared.
JP mentioned that his lifestyle changed when he entered college. “When I joined the hostel, I couldn’t adjust well and lost a lot of weight because I wasn’t eating much. By the time I became an IAS officer, I weighed only 54 kg. Now I weigh around 66–67 kg,” he stated.
He also shared details about his education. “I studied MBBS at Guntur Medical College. After intermediate at VijayawadaLoyola College, I secured admission to medical school on my first attempt,” he recalled.
