Why Bollywood Is Struggling? Aamir Khan Explains

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has shared his views on the declining performance of Bollywood films at the box office. He stated that the rise of OTT platforms is a major factor behind this trend.
Once considered the dominant force in Indian cinema, Bollywood enjoyed a strong position in terms of budgets and box office collections, surpassing other regional film industries in the country. During that period, the South Indian film industry was often overlooked, and its stars were not widely recognized in northern India. However, the situation has now changed dramatically. South Indian films have gained pan-India recognition, while Bollywood films have struggled at the box office.
Commenting on this shift, Aamir Khan emphasized that the distinction between North and South cinema is irrelevant. Instead, he pointed to the impact of OTT platforms as the key reason for Bollywood’s decline. According to him, audiences who subscribe to OTT services now prefer to wait a few weeks and watch films at home instead of going to theaters. He recalled that before the rise of streaming platforms, moviegoers had no option but to visit theaters for new releases.
Aamir Khan further noted that unless a film receives exceptionally positive feedback, audiences are reluctant to watch it in cinemas. He criticized the current business model, where films are made available on multiple platforms soon after release, as self-destructive for the industry. He urged audiences to support cinema by watching movies in theaters.
