Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases Emerge in Andhra Pradesh; Health Minister Satyakumar Reviews Situation

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), which has been causing concern in Maharashtra, is now gradually spreading southward. While Maharashtra has reported a high number of cases, recent cases have surfaced at the Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH) in Andhra Pradesh. Five GBS patients are currently receiving treatment in Guntur.
Against this backdrop, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Satyakumar Yadav, who is on a tour of Anantapur and Sri Sathya Sai districts, directed Special Chief Secretary (Health) M.T. Krishna Babu to visit Guntur GGH on Friday to assess the situation.
Krishna Babu briefed the minister on the current status of GBS cases in the state, stating that 17 patients across various government hospitals (GGHs) are undergoing treatment. Minister Satyakumar instructed that adequate stocks of immunoglobulin injections be maintained in all GGHs. Additionally, he directed Krishna Babu to procure more immunoglobulin injections if required. He reassured patients and the public that there is no need for panic.
The minister also confirmed that full-scale treatment facilities are available at GGHs. Of the five GBS patients currently admitted at Guntur GGH, two were discharged two days ago, Krishna Babu informed. Patients from Konaseema, Guntur, Giddalur, and Narasaraopet have been admitted to Guntur GGH for treatment.
Krishna Babu noted that 80% of GBS patients have recovered without immunoglobulin injections, while only 10–15% required intensive care and immunoglobulin treatment.
