Hyderabad's Dr. Nageswar Reddy: First Indian Doctor with Three Padma Awards

Dr. Duvvuri Nageswar Reddy, Chairman of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) in Hyderabad and a renowned gastroenterologist, has achieved a rare distinction in India. The central government recently announced the Padma Vibhushan award, the second-highest civilian honor in the country, for Dr. Nageswar Reddy. He had previously been conferred with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards, making him the only doctor in India to receive all three prestigious Padma honors.

Hailing from Visakhapatnam, Dr. Nageswar Reddy completed his MBBS at Kurnool Medical College, his MD at Madras Medical College, and his DM at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. After serving as a gastroenterology specialist at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad, he founded the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology. Throughout his career, he has dedicated his life to medical innovation, education, research, and patient care.

The AIG Hospital currently offers 40 types of medical services. Dr. Nageswar Reddy is recognized as the first doctor to introduce Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) and developed "Nagi Stent," which is used for bile duct treatments via endoscopy. He also served as the first Indian president of the World Endoscopy Organization and established the Asian Healthcare Foundation to provide health services in rural areas.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Nageswar Reddy and his team played a pivotal role in combating the virus. They developed treatment protocols for gastrointestinal issues in COVID-19 patients. His global accolades include the "Master of the World Gastroenterology Organization Award" and the prestigious "Rudolf V. Schindler Award" in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Dr. Nageswar Reddy’s wife, Carol Ann Reddy, is a dermatologist and continues to contribute to the medical field.
