Respect actresses like heroes, Vijayashanthi tells media

Vijayashanthi, a Member of the Legislative Council and former leading actress, made a request to the media during a recent public appearance, emphasizing the importance of respectful treatment towards actresses.

Speaking at the success meet of the film Arjun S/o Vyjayanthi, in which she played an honest police officer, Vijayashanthi expressed concern about the manner in which some journalists address female actors during interviews. She stated, “Some reporters address actresses informally using singular pronouns like ‘nuvvu’ [you], which can come across as disrespectful. It would be more appropriate and respectful to use ‘meeru’ [you - plural/formal].”

She added that she had observed this trend in many interviews and suggested that extending equal respect to heroines, just as it is shown to heroes, would foster a more respectful environment.

“Respecting heroines is just as important as respecting heroes. If the media sets the standard by treating us respectfully, then others will follow that example,” said Vijayashanthi.

Clarifying her remarks, Vijayashanthi stated that her comments were not meant to be misinterpreted. “This is simply my personal opinion,” she said, emphasizing that her intention was to offer a constructive suggestion to improve the discourse between the media and female actors.

Vijayashanthi, once hailed as the “Lady Superstar,” recently re-entered the film industry with the movie Sarkaru Vaari Paata, while continuing her political career.
