Telangana Receives Sankranti Gift: Union Minister Piyush Goyal to Inaugurate National Turmeric Board Today

A long-standing demand of farmers in Telangana's Nizamabad district is set to be fulfilled today with the inauguration of the National Turmeric Board. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, will launch the board virtually, following the green signal given by the Central Government for its establishment in Nizamabad (Indur). This move fulfills the promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the previous elections in Telangana.

On October 4 last year, the Ministry of Commerce issued a gazette notification regarding the establishment of the National Turmeric Board. Recently, the Central Government officially announced on Monday that the board would be set up in Nizamabad. BJP leader Palle Gangareddy, a resident of Ankapur village in Armoor Mandal of Nizamabad district, has been appointed as the chairman of the board. Initially, the board will operate from the existing Regional Spices Board office in Nizamabad, with activities commencing from today.

The issue of setting up the Turmeric Board gained significant attention during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. It became a key electoral issue after 176 farmers filed nominations against the then sitting BRS MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha. Additionally, 30 turmeric farmers from Indur filed nominations in Varanasi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi contested, bringing national focus to their demands. Despite winning with a majority of over 160,000 votes in the 2014 elections, Kalvakuntla Kavitha lost the 2019 elections by a margin of 70,000 votes, partly due to the strong opposition from turmeric farmers.

On the occasion of the board's inauguration, Union Minister Kishan Reddy remarked that the promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the previous assembly elections is now being fulfilled. He stated that the establishment of the Turmeric Board serves as a Sankranti gift for farmers and expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister on behalf of the farmers while also acknowledging his role as BJP's state president.
