China Reports Decline in HMPV Cases Amid Rising Concerns in India

The number of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases is steadily increasing across India, with new infections emerging in various regions. This week alone, Gujarat, Assam, and Puducherry reported fresh cases, bringing the total count to 17. As these numbers grow, international health experts have raised concerns about a potential outbreak.

In contrast, China has reported a decline in HMPV cases, providing a sense of relief amidst global apprehensions. During a media briefing organized by China’s National Health Commission, researcher Wang Liping clarified that HMPV is not a newly discovered virus. “This virus has existed for at least two decades. It was first identified in the Netherlands in 2001,” Wang said.

While there has been an increase in cases over the past year, Wang noted that such fluctuations are not unusual. He further highlighted that the number of positive cases in northern China is now on the decline, reducing fears of a larger spread in the region.

Despite China’s improvement, vigilance remains high globally, with experts keeping a close watch on countries like India, where infections are currently rising.
