HMPV Cases Reported in Bengaluru: ICMR Responds

The global community, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, is now concerned about the emergence of another virus known as HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus). Recent reports have highlighted the increasing prevalence of this virus in China, sparking international attention.

Now, HMPV has also made headlines in India. Two children in Bengaluru have tested positive for the virus, causing anxiety among health officials. In response, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued a statement addressing the situation. The council confirmed that HMPV, known for causing respiratory infections, is present not only in other countries but also in India.

ICMR clarified that while HMPV can lead to respiratory complications, India is fully prepared to manage such infections. “Based on the available data, there is no cause for panic at present,” the council stated. It added that cases reported in other countries primarily show respiratory symptoms among those infected.

Amid concerns regarding the spread of HMPV, the Union Ministry of Health has been closely monitoring the situation from all angles. ICMR assured that it will continue to keep a vigilant eye on the spread of HMPV throughout the year to ensure timely response and action.

This comes as part of India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare system in dealing with viral infections. Health authorities emphasized the importance of maintaining awareness while assuring the public that the current situation does not warrant alarm.
