NRI Charged ₹10,000 for Free Wheelchair Service at Railway Station!

The Indian Railways has taken serious note of an incident at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi, where a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) passenger was charged ₹10,000 for availing wheelchair services, which are meant to be free. The authorities have ordered an inquiry into the matter and revoked the porter’s license involved in the incident. They also directed that 90% of the collected amount be refunded to the passenger.

Northern Railways issued a strong statement, emphasizing that such incidents would not be tolerated. The Delhi Division confirmed that the badge of the porter had been confiscated. The railways reiterated their commitment to ensuring passenger welfare, stating that wheelchair services at railway stations are provided free of charge.

On December 28, the daughter of the NRI passenger, Payal, lodged a complaint with railway officials, alleging that ₹10,000 was extorted from her father at the Delhi railway station for wheelchair services. Following the complaint, officials identified the porter using CCTV footage and recovered ₹9,000, which was refunded to the passenger.

Expressing dismay over the incident, the Divisional Railway Manager remarked that Indian Railways is dedicated to providing safe and convenient travel experiences for passengers. He stated that such incidents tarnish the reputation of the railways and undermine passenger trust. Assurances were given that strict action would be taken against those responsible. Additionally, passengers facing any issues were urged to report them via the helpline number 139.
