Resuming from their overnight score of 358/9, India added 11 more runs to finish at 369. Centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy was dismissed by Nathan Lyon, caught by Mitchell Starc, after scoring a remarkable 114 runs.
Mohammed Siraj remained unbeaten, scoring 4 runs off 14 balls. With a massive first-innings total of 474, Australia secured a lead of 116 runs.
In their second innings, Australia batted cautiously. By the end of 24 overs, they were at 50/2, extending their lead to 155 runs. Debutant Sam Constas was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah, while Usman Khawaja was sent back by Mohammed Siraj.
