Steve Smith Creates Record with Century in Melbourne Test

Steve Smith, the former captain of the Australian cricket team, etched his name in the history books with a remarkable performance in the ongoing fourth Test against India at Melbourne, part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Smith scored his second century of the series, amassing 140 runs, including three sixes and 13 fours. This innings marked his 34th century in Test cricket, equaling legendary players such as Sunil Gavaskar, Younis Khan, Mahela Jayawardene, and Brian Lara. Ricky Ponting, with 41 centuries, remains ahead of Smith among Australian cricketers.

Smith also broke records with his consistent performances against India. By surpassing Joe Root’s record of 10 centuries, Smith became the player with the most Test centuries against India, achieving this feat in just 43 innings with 11 centuries. This latest achievement makes Smith the first player to score over 10 centuries against two different teams, namely India and England.

In addition, Smith leads all players in overall centuries against India across formats. He has now scored 16 centuries against India, overtaking Ricky Ponting, who managed 14. His century in Melbourne adds to a stellar record, with 7 of his 11 Test centuries against India scored in Australia. Notably, two of these centuries have come in the current series.

Smith’s remarkable career achievements include five centuries against India in One-Day Internationals and consistent dominance in Tests, showcasing his unmatched ability to excel against strong opposition.
