Doctors at Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital perform a complex procedure to save an ‘intestinal tumor’ patient
- Patient had bleeding tumor in the size of a lemon, located dangerously close to pancreas
The patient, Mr. Nageshwar rao, a native of Hyderabad, when brought to Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital, was diagnosed of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST), which was in an advanced stage. GISTs are uncommon cancers that start in special cells in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, also known as the digestive tract. Due to internal bleeding, patient’s hemoglobin levels too were very low, increasing the risk to his life.
Commenting on the treatment, Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, Consultant Gastro Surgeon, Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital said, “GISTs are curable if detected in early stage. But in this case, it was a bleeding tumor at an advanced stage, and located very close to pancreas. Due to low hemoglobin levels, the patient’s condition had to be stabilized, before taking any further surgical action. We first treated the patient for his low hemoglobin levels, and then with utmost care removed the tumor without causing any harm to pancreas or any other vital organs. From a near hopeless condition at the start, the patient’s failing health condition was revived, he was operated on, and discharged from the hospital on day five.”
The patient is now doing fine and is leading a normal life. His post-surgery assessment is normal, without any complications. The team of doctors who performed surgical procedure on this patient include, Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, Dr Mohan, Dr Shivanand and Dr Praveen.
