Diabetic patients must check Creatinine levels if suffering from diarrhea and vomiting
- A 68-year-old woman was rescued from a near-fatal condition with increased Creatinine levels due to diarrhea and vomiting
A 68-year-old woman (Mrs. Manorama), resident of Patancheruvu area was rushed to Century Hospital on January 27th, with the history of diarrhea and vomiting for the two preceding days. She was a patient of hypertension and diabetes for the past many years. Though the patient did not have a history of chronic kidney ailment or any heart related problems, her serum creatinine levels shot up to 6.8 mg per deciliter, a drastic rise from the normal levels of 1.0 mg per deciliter or lower.
Commenting on the complication and treatment administered, Dr. D Arun Kumar, Consultant Nephrologist; Dr. Shraddha Sanghani & Dr. Parveen Sultana, both Consultants of Internal Medicine at Century Hospital who form the team of doctors that treated the patient said, “In addition to rise in Serum Creatinine levels, we notice the patient’s urine output too had gone down substantially and there is acidosis (excessive acid condition) in the blood. Post counselling the patient and her family members, she was put on hemodialysis. And integrated approach of fluid management, perfect dosage of antibiotics, correction of electrolyte disturbances, and renal replacement therapy were performed for a couple of days to pull the patient out of imminent danger.”
“After four days of intensive treatment, the patient’s condition started improving and her Creatinine levels normalized to 1.0 mg per deciliter. Patient is doing fine now and is getting discharged today after a week of hospitalization. In view of this case, we would like to suggest that every diabetic patient must not neglect when suffering from diarrhea and vomiting, because these symptoms could lead to severe complications, especially among the elderly people,” added the team of doctors.
People with Covid-19 may experience gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of appetite. These symptoms might occur alone or with other flu-like symptoms such as fever and coughing. If an individual is tested positive for Covid-19, he/she must self-isolate to avoid transmitting the virus to other people. But if the individual is a diabetic, then getting Serum Creatinine levels checked is important to avoid any complications.
