AP Governor pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on Martyrs Day

Vijayawada, January 30: Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 73rd death anniversary, observed as Martyrs Day across the nation. Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan offered floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi in a programme held in Durbar Hall at Raj Bhavan on Saturday.

Governor Harichandan along with officers and staff members of Raj Bhavan observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to Mahatma Gandhi and in memory of all those who fought for the country’s freedom and sacrificed their lives. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Harichandan said India is now a free country and free nation and the country has become a big power both militarily and economically because of the sacrifices made by the great freedom fighters.

The Governor said people across the country fought against the mighty British rule on the call given by Mahatma Gandhi and when Gandhiji asked the British to quit India, they could not believe that such a mighty British power could be driven out of the country by the peaceful and non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi had the confidence that the day will come when the British will leave India and the country will become a free nation, said the Governor. Governor Harichandan said the leaders of many countries emulated Mahatma Gandhi and followed the principles of ahimsa and satyagraha laid down by him, in their freedom movements.

The Governor said people of the country will always remember Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi who is respected all over the world as a great symbol of peace and non-violence. Mukesh Kumar Meena, Secretary to Governor, A. Shyam Prasad, Joint Secretary and other officers and staff members of Raj Bhavan have attended the programme.
