AP Governor participates in 108th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Viswanath Pasayat through video conference

Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan participated as Chief Guest at the 108th Birth Anniversary celebrations of late Viswanath Pasayat, a legendary figure in the freedom movement and an eminent jurist held in Cuttack on Saturday, through video conference from Raj Bhavan at Vijayawada. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Harichandan said late Viswanath Pasayat was a social leader, senior advocate and freedom fighter. The Governor said even though Viswanath Pasayat hailed from a zamindar family he fought for the weaker and underprivileged sections of the society by giving up his comforts for the love of motherland. The Governor said Viswanath Pasayat was inspired by the call given by Mahatma Gandhi and the sacrifices of freedom fighters and played an active role in the revolt against the British rule. Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan said late Viswanath Pasayat will always be remembered for defending the rights of freedom fighters who were put in jail by the British. As Editor of the ‘Adhunika’ newspaper, Viswanath Pasayat highlighted the struggle for freedom and inspired people to join the movement, said the Governor. Governor Harichandan said Dr. Justice Arijit Pasayat, retired Judge of the Supreme Court and a legal luminary, has proved himself to be a worthy son of a worthy father.

The programme commenced with a message from Dr. Justice Arijit Pasayat, retired Judge of the Supreme Court and son of late Viswanath Pasayat. K. Parasaran, Senior Supreme Court Advocate and Former Attorney General of India, delivered the Memorial Lecture on the topic of ‘Constitutional morality and Constitutional protection’ and said over a period of time the interpretation of Constitutional morality has become subjective in nature with different legal personalities giving different opinions.  Addressing the gathering Justice Mohammad Rafiq, Chief Justice of Odisha High Court, said late Viswanath Pasayat was a legend of legal fraternity and was recognized as a nationalist and a student leader with leftist leanings, who fought for the liberation of underprivileged and oppressed sections of the society.  Justice Joseph Kurien, retired judge of the Supreme Court, several retired and sitting judges of Odisha High Court, Mukesh Kumar Meena, Secretary to Governor and other dignitaries participated in the function which was totally held in a virtual mode.
