Robinhood is a crime-comedy directed by Venky Kudumula, starring Nithiin and Sreeleela in lead roles. Produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the film garnered attention due to the successful Bheeshma combo of Nithiin and Venky. With expectations riding high, let’s see how well Robinhood manages to connect with the audience.
Plot Summary:
Ram (Nithiin), an orphan raised in an orphanage, witnesses the struggles of Murthy (Shubhalekha Sudhakar), who works tirelessly to support orphans. Realizing that society has more pretenders than actual helpers, Ram decides to steal money from the corrupt and fund orphanages, taking on the alias ‘Robinhood.’
One of his heists impacts a close associate of the Home Minister (Aadukalam Naren), prompting the Minister to bring in a special officer, Victor (Shine Tom Chacko), to catch Robinhood. Meanwhile, in Australia, a wealthy man’s daughter, Neera (Sreeleela), receives a distress call from Rudrakonda in India. Believing her relatives are in danger, she returns to India. How Neera gets entangled with villain Saami (Devdatta Nage), and how Robinhood crosses her path, forms the rest of the story.
Analysis:
The core idea of Robinhood revolves around the value of gratitude — one should never forget those who once helped, and must stand by them in their time of need. The film also underlines how greed can lead people to align with wrongdoers, and eventually, they too face the consequences of those associations.
The narrative travels between Australia and Hyderabad, ultimately unfolding in the fictional region of Rudrakonda. The villain draws the heroine from abroad into this setup, and unexpectedly, the hero joins her in the conflict. This brings the hero, heroine, and villain face to face on the same battlefield. While Rajendra Prasad from the hero's side and Vennela Kishore from the heroine's side attempt to provide comic relief, these efforts only partially succeed.
Director Venky Kudumula tries to add a comedic touch to the story wherever possible. However, even in moments that demand seriousness, the insertion of comedy dilutes the emotional impact, leading to an unsatisfying experience. The viewer is often left wondering whether the hero is on a serious mission or simply indulging in antics, and this confusion only grows as the film nears its climax. Though the story includes some twists in the end, the audience may already be too disengaged by that point to care.
Performances:
Nithiin looks stylish and fits the role physically. Sreeleela brings energy to her performance. Vennela Kishore’s comedy works in places. However, several supporting characters, including those played by Aadukalam Naren, Mime Gopi, and even Shine Tom Chacko, are underdeveloped. The late introduction of new characters near the end adds to the confusion. The role of David Warner (in a surprise appearance) feels unnecessary and forced.
Technical Aspects:
Director Venky Kudumula’s attempt to blend comedy into a socially driven storyline feels out of sync. The story lacks realism, especially in sequences like a billionaire’s daughter relying on a broke security agency to handle dangerous criminals.
G.V. Prakash Kumar’s background score occasionally elevates tension but lacks consistency. Sai Sriram’s cinematography stands out, capturing both urban and rural settings effectively. Editing could have been tighter; several scenes feel stretched and unnecessary.
Final Verdict:
In Robinhood, the hero doesn't just outsmart the villain—he makes a mockery of him. But in the process, the film ends up confusing and disengaging the audience as well. A few laughs aside, Robinhood struggles to leave a lasting impression.
