Directed by Shiva, Kanguva features Suriya in the lead role and is set against a backdrop spanning from 1070 to 2024. The movie explores two timelines: a young boy in 1070 facing survival challenges amidst tribal conflicts, and his connection to Francis (played by Suriya) in the present day, set in Goa. After escaping an experimental program overseas, the boy crosses paths with Francis, and an unexpected bond forms between them. Meanwhile, Francis is caught up in a romantic yet strained relationship with Angelina (Disha Patani), as they both share a common yet turbulent professional life.
As the film transitions between these two eras, Francis finds himself protecting the boy, leading the storyline to the thick forests of 1070, where five tribal clans struggle for dominance. Bobby Deol portrays Rudhir, a tribal leader with foreign support who wages a battle against Kanguva and the boy. The film’s primary theme revolves around defending cultural heritage and standing against foreign exploitation, with Kanguva battling for his identity and clan.
Analysis:
The film, crafted by Shiva and Aadi Narayana, ambitiously intertwines two timelines. While the idea of a dual-period storyline is intriguing, the execution lacks clarity, with overly complex characters and tribes that can be difficult to follow. Though the director’s intent to build tension is apparent, the excessive focus on action scenes detracts from narrative depth. The action sequences, while intense, can feel overwhelming due to their loudness and frequent shouting.
The costumes and sets, designed to reflect the mountainous tribes, stand out but feel excessive at times. Disha Patani’s role lacks depth, underutilizing her presence, and Yogi Babu’s character appears somewhat sidelined, not contributing significantly to the storyline.
Performance and Technical Aspects:
Shiva, known for his expertise in mass action films, seems to have missed the mark here, as the narrative’s focus on action overshadows character development. The cinematography by Vetri Palanisamy, however, shines, with scenic shots capturing the lush forests, oceans, and rain-filled sequences. Devi Sri Prasad’s soundtrack is adequate but occasionally overpowering, which disrupts the flow. Editing by Nishad Yusuf is fair, but tighter pacing and more emphasis on emotional connections could have elevated the film.
Production Quality:
Studio Green and UV Creations have provided strong production values, giving Kanguva a visually compelling edge. The film's location choices are beautiful and serve as a significant highlight. While the film is likely to appeal to Suriya’s fans, broader audiences may find the lack of narrative clarity a drawback.
Verdict:
While Kanguva attempts to deliver an epic tribal tale with high production values, the emphasis on action and complexity in storytelling detracts from a cohesive experience. Though visually striking, the film may leave viewers wanting a more balanced narrative that better connects with its emotional core.
