MAX
  • A Kannada action thriller now streaming on ZEE5
  • Content reminiscent of Karthi’s Khaidi
  • Weakly written villain characters
  • Underpowered supporting roles

Kiccha Sudeepa, one of the biggest stars in Kannada cinema, is known for taking up roles that have significance, even when working in other languages. His latest film MAX, directed by Vijay Karthikeyaa, was released in theaters on December 25, 2023, and has now premiered on ZEE5 in Telugu.

Plot Summary:
Minister Parashuram (Sharath Lohithaswa) and Minister Daniel (Aadukalam Naren) are powerful political figures feared by everyone around them. They maintain absolute control over their region, ensuring that no one dares to testify against them, and even the police officers hesitate to file cases. Due to this, police officers are reluctant to take charge in their area.

Amidst this, a new officer, Max, arrives in town. Meanwhile, Parashuram and Daniel’s sons, Michael and Veera, are close friends who abuse their fathers' influence to act as they please. When they physically assault the police, Max takes a firm stand and arrests them. However, both Michael and Veera mysteriously die in custody, causing chaos and fear among the officers.

Max suggests secretly disposing of their bodies to avoid trouble. But as they attempt to move the bodies, Parashuram and Daniel’s men surround the police station. How does Max handle this tense situation? What impact do these events have on the police force? Who is responsible for Michael and Veera’s deaths? These questions drive the rest of the story.

Analysis:
The film revolves around the theme of power-hungry politicians and their reckless heirs, with a fearless police officer standing against them. The premise, featuring a tough officer posted at an old colonial-era police station, reminds viewers of Khaidi.

The director presents Max as a straightforward, fearless officer who takes on the responsibility of protecting his fellow policemen from political threats. The character design is engaging, especially with the introduction of Varalaxmi Sarathkumar as Crime Branch officer Roop, adding intensity to the plot.

With bodies inside the station, political goons outside, and Roop operating with her own motives, the film sets up an engaging conflict. However, the storyline, screenplay, and certain elements bear a strong resemblance to Khaidi, making it feel less fresh.

Performances:
Kiccha Sudeepa delivers a commendable performance, carrying the weight of the film on his shoulders. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s entry is intriguing, but her character arc loses momentum as the film progresses.

Sharath Lohithaswa, Aadukalam Naren, and Sunil are cast in key roles but fail to make a strong impact due to underwritten characters. Their roles lack the intensity needed to elevate the story.

Technical Aspects:
Cinematography by Shekar Chandra is visually appealing.
Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score is a major highlight, adding weight to key sequences.
Ganesh Babu’s editing could have been sharper, as some scenes feel stretched.

Final Verdict:
With stronger supporting characters, a more polished screenplay, and fewer Khaidi similarities, MAX could have been a next-level thriller. However, due to these shortcomings, it settles as an average action drama.
