IPL Brand Valuation Surpasses ₹1 Lakh Crore

The Indian Premier League (IPL), which began in 2008, has entered its 18th season this year. The tournament, which commenced on March 22 and will continue until May 25, has become one of the most celebrated events in India. The brand value and revenue of this mega tournament continue to rise significantly.

According to certain media reports, the IPL's brand value has surpassed ₹1 lakh crore in 2024. The combined revenue of the 10 teams participating in the tournament has been recorded at ₹6,797 crore for the same year. At the same time, the IPL’s overall brand value has increased by 13 percent, reaching USD 12 billion (₹10,29,09,68,55,600), as reported by The Times of India.

In 2009, the IPL's brand value stood at USD 2 billion. By 2024, it has reached USD 12 billion. In 2023, for the first time, the brand crossed the USD 10 billion mark, standing at USD 10.7 billion. Notably, media rights alone contribute ₹48,000 crore to this value.

Four major teams in the tournament—Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)—have each recorded brand values exceeding USD 100 million (₹8,57,75,65,000). Every season, IPL generates approximately ₹12,000 crore through media rights alone. Additionally, the government has exempted the IPL from taxes, which is noteworthy.

However, despite not collecting direct taxes from the IPL, the Indian government still earns significantly from the matches. Through the IPL 2025 mega auction held in November 2024, the central treasury received ₹90 crore. This revenue is generated through taxes on players' salaries. The government receives this income via Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), collecting 10 percent from the salaries of Indian players and 20 percent from foreign players.
