Telangana Legislative Assembly Approves SC Classification Bill

The Telangana Legislative Assembly has approved the Scheduled Caste (SC) Classification Bill, which categorizes 59 SC communities into three groups. The bill proposes a 1% reservation for the most backward 15 castes in Group-1, a 9% reservation for castes including the Madiga community in Group-2, and a 5% reservation for castes including the Mala community in Group-3.

During the discussion on the SC Classification Bill, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stated that the Congress party has always stood by Dalits since India’s independence. He emphasized that the party has provided numerous opportunities to SCs in both the government and the party. He highlighted that Babu Jagjivan Ram was honored with various central ministerial responsibilities and recalled that Damodaram Sanjivayya was the first SC leader to become a Chief Minister in India. He also mentioned that the demand for SC classification had been ongoing even in undivided Andhra Pradesh.

Revanth Reddy expressed his satisfaction in resolving this long-standing issue during his tenure as Chief Minister, noting that the struggle for SC classification had cost many lives over the decades. He stated that the government announced its decision in favor of SC classification within an hour of the Supreme Court’s ruling. He also mentioned that a ministerial subcommittee, led by Uttam Kumar Reddy, was formed to address the issue and that the commission’s report was approved without any modifications.
