Elon Musk Calls for U.S. Withdrawal from NATO

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has suggested that the United States should withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Musk, who serves as the co-chairman of the government efficiency division (DOGE), made these remarks in response to a social media post advocating for America’s immediate exit from NATO. He argued that it is unreasonable for the United States to fund Europe’s defense.
Musk had expressed a similar opinion on March 2, aligning with a social media post that called for the U.S. to leave both NATO and the United Nations. His latest remarks have gained significance as NATO, which consists of 32 member countries, celebrates its 76th anniversary.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has also made critical statements about NATO in the past. He has emphasized that America should support only those member nations that contribute a certain percentage of their GDP to defense spending. Trump has also stated that the U.S. would not protect countries that fail to meet their financial obligations.
However, under a 2023 law, a U.S. president cannot unilaterally withdraw from NATO without securing a two-thirds majority approval in the Senate.
