Unprecedented Demand for Fish—Here’s Why!

The impact of bird flu has significantly reduced chicken sales, prompting non-vegetarian consumers to seek alternatives. As a result, fish sales have surged, leading to price increases of ₹30 to ₹100 per kilogram, depending on the variety. Despite the price hike, demand remains strong.

On Sunday, the Mushirabad fish market witnessed heavy footfall as buyers from different parts of the city flocked to purchase fish. The bustling marketplace saw traders selling nearly 60 tonnes of fish in a single day, compared to the usual 40 tonnes on regular days.

With the rising demand, traders have increased fish prices. For instance, the price of Rava fish, which was ₹140 per kg on regular days, has now risen to ₹160-₹180. Bocha fish, previously priced at ₹120 per kg, is now selling for ₹140. The cost of Korameenu (Murrel fish) has jumped from ₹450 to ₹550 per kg, while prawns, which were ₹300 per kg, are now being sold at ₹350.

Fish vendors attribute this surge in demand and prices directly to the bird flu scare, which has made consumers wary of purchasing chicken.
