Vijayawada Metro Rail: Two Corridors Planned in Initial Phase

The long-awaited dream of Vijayawada residents for a metro rail system is moving closer to reality. The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC) has identified 91 acres of land required for metro corridor construction within NTR and Krishna districts. In a recent development, APMRC officials submitted their proposals to NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha.

Initially, the Vijayawada Metro Rail project was planned with four corridors, but the current focus is on constructing two corridors—one from Gannavaram and another from Penamaluru. Land acquisition will proceed as per earlier plans, ensuring both corridors converge at Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) in Vijayawada.

The first corridor, spanning 26 kilometers, will start from PNBS and pass through Vijayawada Railway Station, Eluru Road, and Ramavarappadu, merging onto the national highway before reaching Gannavaram. Key locations along this route include Yogashram, Vijayawada Airport, Gudavalli, Chaitanya College, Nidamanuru, MBT Center, Prasadam Padu, and Ramavarappadu Junction. From there, the metro will turn towards Eluru Road and proceed through Gunadala, Padavalarevu, Machavaram Down, Sitarampuram Signal, and Besant Road Railway Station before returning to PNBS.

The second corridor, covering 12.5 kilometers, will start from PNBS and follow Bandar Road, passing through Benz Circle, Autonagar, Kanuru, and Poranki before reaching Penamaluru. Notable stops along this route include Victoria Museum, Indira Gandhi Stadium, Benz Circle, Autonagar, Ashok Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Kanuru Center, Tadigadapa, and Poranki.

This metro project is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility in Vijayawada, reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between key areas.
