India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Completes Trials, Set for Launch Soon

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train has successfully completed its trial runs and is gearing up to offer services to passengers. Designed for a fast, safe, and comfortable journey, the train is expected to be a milestone in Indian Railways, providing a world-class travel experience.

The Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) conducted the trial run of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on a 540-kilometer stretch between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The construction of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train was completed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai on December 17 last year.

Unlike the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express, which features only chair cars, the sleeper version is designed for long-distance travel. The berths are built with advanced technology to ensure a comfortable sleeping experience, and the train is equipped with multiple safety features and passenger amenities. It also promises a smooth travel experience.

Following the successful trial, nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains are expected to be introduced between April and December this year. Full-scale production of these trains is set to begin by 2026-27. The train consists of 16 coaches, categorized into AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier, with a total passenger capacity of 1,128.

Key safety features of the train include crash buffers, deformation tubes, and fire barrier walls. Additionally, it is equipped with automatic doors, cushioned berths, onboard Wi-Fi, and the Kavach system—a safety mechanism designed to prevent rail accidents. A fire detection system has also been installed, along with an "anti-climbing" feature to reduce the impact of collisions.
