United States Responds to Deportation of Illegal Indian Immigrants

A group of 104 Indian nationals, who were residing illegally in the United States, was deported and arrived in Amritsar yesterday afternoon aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft. Reports suggesting that these immigrants were transported in shackles, akin to criminals, have sparked controversy. The issue also caused disruptions in today’s parliamentary proceedings.
In response, a spokesperson for the U.S. diplomatic mission in Delhi stated that enforcing immigration laws strictly is essential for ensuring the security of the country and its citizens. The spokesperson emphasized that this is a fundamental policy of the U.S. government but declined to provide further details regarding the deportation flight.
Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, addressed the issue in Parliament. He noted that the deportation of illegal immigrants from the U.S. has been an ongoing process for several years. He stated that the U.S. deports illegal immigrants from various countries and cited figures showing that in 2012, 530 Indian nationals were deported, a number that has now increased to over 2,000.
