Steve Smith Breaks Virat Kohli's All-Time Record

Australian cricket star Steve Smith delivered a stellar performance in the ongoing Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle, scoring his 35th Test century. This century also marks his 17th Test hundred on foreign soil, setting a new record in Test cricket.

Until now, Indian cricket star Virat Kohli held the record for the most Test centuries scored outside home, with 16 centuries. However, Smith has now surpassed Kohli by registering his 17th overseas century.

In the same Test, Smith also reached another significant milestone by surpassing 10,000 Test runs. He achieved this landmark on the very first ball he faced on Day 1 of the match. With this feat, Smith has joined an elite group of legendary cricketers who have crossed the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket.

Before this match, many anticipated that Smith would reach this milestone during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series, but he had remained just one run short at 9,999. With this achievement, Smith has become only the fourth Australian cricketer to surpass 10,000 Test runs, following Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, and Allan Border. Overall, he is the 15th cricketer in the history of Test cricket to achieve this milestone.

At 35 years old, Smith reached this landmark in 115 Tests with an impressive batting average of over 55. Notably, he is the only batsman to achieve 10,000 Test runs with a better average (57.40) than Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara.

Meanwhile, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting made an interesting remark about the ‘Fab Four’ of modern cricket—Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, and Steve Smith. Ponting stated that, among these four, Smith stands out as the best batsman of this generation.
