30 Dead, 60 Injured in Kumbh Mela Stampede at Prayagraj

A tragic incident occurred at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, where a stampede led to multiple casualties. The incident took place after midnight, as a massive crowd gathered at the Triveni Sangam for a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya. The sudden collapse of barricades resulted in a deadly stampede. However, the exact number of casualties was initially unclear.

In response, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) overseeing the Maha Kumbh operations addressed the media. He confirmed that 30 people had lost their lives in the stampede, while 60 others sustained injuries. He stated that 25 of the deceased had been identified, while details of the remaining five were yet to be ascertained.

According to the DIG, the stampede occurred between 1:00 AM and 2:00 AM due to the collapse of barricades. He also announced the launch of a dedicated helpline number, ‘1920,’ to assist people in obtaining information about their relatives. Additionally, he clarified that no VIP visitors would be allowed at the Kumbh Mela today.
