Jasprit Bumrah’s Fitness Doubts Loom Over India’s Champions Trophy Hopes

The ICC Champions Trophy is set to take place next month in Pakistan and Dubai, marking its return after eight years. However, India's hopes of clinching the title have been dealt a significant blow, as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah's full fitness remains uncertain. According to a recent report by The Times of India, it is highly unlikely that Bumrah will achieve 100% fitness unless a miracle happens.
Bumrah has been struggling with a persistent back injury since the final Test against Australia in Sydney. He is currently in touch with Dr. Rowan Schouten, a renowned specialist based in New Zealand, the report stated. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also planned for Bumrah to travel to New Zealand for further treatment before the tournament. However, the timeline for this trip has not yet been finalized.
"If Bumrah regains full fitness within the given timeline, it will be nothing short of miraculous," BCCI sources reportedly told The Times of India. In light of this uncertainty, the BCCI is preparing backup options for the Champions Trophy squad, with selectors considering Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj as potential replacements.
Dr. Schouten, who performed surgery on Bumrah during the 2022 T20 World Cup after another injury, has been receiving the pacer’s recent medical reports. The decision on whether Bumrah should travel to New Zealand for further treatment will depend on Schouten’s feedback, according to the report.
India is also scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against England ahead of the Champions Trophy. The squad for this series has already been announced, and it includes Harshit Rana. If Bumrah does not recover in time, Rana is likely to be included in the Champions Trophy squad as well.
This development comes as a setback for India’s campaign, as Bumrah’s presence is considered crucial for their bowling lineup. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his situation, but his participation in the prestigious tournament remains uncertain.
