Rare Incident: Rahane Walks Back, Umpires Call Him to Bat Again

In a bizarre incident during the Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir, Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane, who had walked back to the pavilion after being caught by the wicketkeeper, was recalled to bat by the umpires.

The sequence of events began when Rahane nicked a delivery to the wicketkeeper, leading to his dismissal. However, the umpires later determined that the bowler had overstepped the crease, making the delivery a no-ball. Field umpire clarified that he had tried to ask Rahane to wait while the no-ball decision was reviewed, but the player had already returned to the pavilion by then. Upon confirming the no-ball, Rahane was recalled to resume his innings.

Despite this unexpected second chance, Rahane was unable to capitalize on it. Shortly after, he lofted another delivery from the same bowler into the air, where Paras Dogra of Jammu & Kashmir made a spectacular diving catch at mid-off, dismissing Rahane once again.

Rules Regarding Such Situations

According to cricket regulations, field umpires have the authority to recall a batter to resume their innings if the dismissal is deemed to have occurred due to a misunderstanding. However, such decisions must be made before the next delivery is bowled. If the match has reached a point where players believe it is concluded—such as after a supposed final dismissal—the umpires must make their decision before leaving the field.
