Ram Gopal Varma Clarifies on Cheque Bounce Case

Controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has responded to the three-month jail sentence imposed by the Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai over a cheque bounce case. The court also issued a non-bailable warrant against Varma. Addressing the issue on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Varma stated:

"I want to clarify the punishment imposed by the Andheri court. This case pertains to an incident from seven years ago involving a bounced cheque of ₹2.38 lakh issued to my former employee. My lawyers are attending court proceedings, and since the case is sub judice, I cannot comment further," Varma wrote in his tweet.

The court sentenced Varma to three months of imprisonment and directed him to pay ₹3.72 lakh to the complainant within three months. Failure to do so would result in an additional three months of imprisonment.

The case was filed in 2018 by Mahesh Chandra, who alleged the ₹2.38 lakh cheque had bounced. Despite seven years of ongoing legal arguments, Varma reportedly never appeared in court. Frustrated by his absence, the court issued a non-bailable warrant before delivering the verdict.
