Arrest warrant issued against former Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan

A Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant on Sunday against former Bangladesh cricket captain and legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The warrant was issued in connection with a cheque bounce case involving approximately $300,000 owed to IFIC Bank. According to reports from Cricbuzz, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the warrant.

The case dates back to December 15, 2023, when Shakib, who has been abroad since August 2024, was first accused of issuing bounced cheques. Following an initial investigation, the court had directed Shakib to appear for a hearing on January 19, 2025, but his failure to comply prompted the court to take legal action.

The case implicates Shakib’s company, Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited, along with its Managing Director Gazi Shahgir Hossain and directors Emdadul Haq and Malaika Begum. According to court filings, the company had secured loans from IFIC Bank’s Banani branch at various times and issued cheques to repay portions of the loan. However, these cheques were dishonored due to insufficient funds in the account.

Challenges in Shakib’s Career

Shakib has been facing a turbulent phase both professionally and personally. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently imposed a ban on his bowling, adding to his struggles. Notably, despite his illustrious career, including appearances in five ODI World Cups and nine T20 World Cups for Bangladesh, Shakib was omitted from the 15-member squad announced for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This decision surprised many fans and critics alike.
