BCCI Set to Implement Strict Rules for Players and Coach Gautam Gambhir
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly gearing up to introduce a set of stringent rules aimed at players and the coaching staff, including head coach Gautam Gambhir. This move comes in response to India’s disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and other Test matches last year.
One major change under consideration involves limiting the duration of family stays during overseas tours. Until now, players’ families, especially spouses, were allowed to accompany them throughout long tours. However, BCCI now believes extended family presence during tours may hinder players’ focus and performance. According to a report by Dainik Jagran, the board plans to revert to pre-2019 regulations, which permitted family stays for only two weeks during tours exceeding 45 days.
Restrictions on Team Travel and Family Stay
The board is also considering reintroducing stricter travel protocols for players. As per reports, players will be required to travel only with the team on the official bus, and solo travel will no longer be allowed. The decision is intended to promote unity and discipline within the squad.
In line with the proposed restrictions, BCCI intends to limit the time players can spend with their families during foreign tours. Under the revised rule, cricketers' families will only be allowed to stay with them for two weeks during long assignments. This policy change is expected to curb any potential distractions and improve focus during matches.
Gautam Gambhir’s Manager Faces New Restrictions
The new rules won’t only apply to players but also extend to coaching staff. BCCI is reportedly planning to impose restrictions on Gautam Gambhir’s manager, Gaurav Arora. Under the revised guidelines, Arora will no longer be permitted to stay in the same hotel as the team or access VIP boxes during matches. Additionally, he will be barred from traveling with the team on the official bus.
Excess Baggage Costs to Be Borne by Players
BCCI is also tightening its travel policy by capping the total luggage allowance for each player at 150 kilograms during air travel. Any excess baggage costs beyond this limit will have to be borne by the players themselves.
Meeting with Senior Players and Officials
A crucial meeting was recently held between BCCI officials, team captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Reports suggest that key topics discussed during the meeting included the future of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as well as the tenure of the coaching staff.
Sources indicate that BCCI is considering limiting the maximum term for support staff to three years. Officials believe that prolonged association of certain staff members with the team has resulted in diminished performance. Reappointment of such personnel will depend on their ability to demonstrate consistent and improved results going forward.
