Maha Kumbh Mela Begins in Uttar Pradesh, Expected to Generate ₹2 Lakh Crore Revenue

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, commenced today with grandeur at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Over 5 million devotees participated in the first holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
Recognized as the largest human congregation in the world, this ancient festival is expected to attract more than 400 million devotees to Prayagraj this year. The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has prepared for the event by setting up arrangements across 4,000 hectares. The Maha Kumbh Mela will run from today until February 26.
Mega Event with a Massive Budget and Revenue Expectations
The Uttar Pradesh government allocated a staggering ₹7,000 crore for the 45-day-long event, which is anticipated to generate significant revenue for the state. Trade estimates suggest that the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 could bring in up to ₹2 lakh crore in revenue. If 400 million visitors spend an average of ₹5,000 each, the total economic impact could reach this figure.
According to news agency IANS, trade sources predict that individual spending could rise to ₹10,000 per person, potentially driving total revenues to ₹4 lakh crore. This revenue is projected to boost Uttar Pradesh's nominal and real GDP by over 1%.
Yogi Adityanath Highlights Economic Impact of Previous Events
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recalled that the Prayagraj Ardh Kumbh Mela in 2019 contributed ₹1.2 lakh crore to the state’s economy, with around 240 million visitors attending the event. Speaking to a news channel recently, he noted that this year's Maha Kumbh Mela is expected to draw 400 million devotees, generating up to ₹2 lakh crore in revenue.
