10 Hours of Quality Work Can Change the World: Anand Mahindra

At the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025 conference held in Delhi, Mahindra Group Chairman and prominent businessman Anand Mahindra made notable remarks regarding the importance of quality over quantity in achieving a developed India. Stressing the need for qualitative work, he stated, “It’s not about how much you work, but about how well you work.”

Anand Mahindra’s speech focused on the theme of "Work, Work Hours, and Balance," during which he also referenced recent comments by Infosys founder Narayana Murthy. Murthy had suggested that employees should work for 70 to 90 hours a week to boost productivity. While acknowledging Murthy’s stature and contributions, Mahindra offered a different perspective. “I have great respect for Narayana Murthy and other corporate leaders. However, my point is that the number of hours worked is not what matters; the quality of work matters. Instead of focusing on working 70 or 90 hours a week, we should focus on delivering quality output. Even 10 hours of quality work can make a significant impact on the world,” Mahindra remarked.

When asked about the ideal number of hours employees should work each day, Mahindra clarified, “This is not about fixing a specific number of hours to work each day. Ask me about how to ensure the quality of work, and I will answer. I do not advocate for a rigid number of hours as a rule,” he explained.

In response to a question about how he manages to stay energetic at his age, Mahindra attributed it to engaging with young people. “Interacting with the youth recharges my batteries. Speaking with representatives of the younger generation fills me with new energy and keeps me going,” he added.
