Police Destroy Cockfight Arenas in Several Villages of Eluru District
With the festive spirit of Sankranti already setting in across the two Telugu states, many people from Hyderabad have started heading to their hometowns to celebrate. Meanwhile, in coastal Andhra Pradesh, cockfight organizers have begun preparations, particularly in the twin Godavari districts, where cockfight arenas are already set up.
In response, police have intensified their efforts to crack down on illegal cockfights. In Eluru district’s Jangareddygudem mandal, law enforcement officers demolished several cockfight arenas. Jangareddygudem DSP issued a stern warning to organizers, stating that strict action would be taken if cockfights, gambling, or other illegal activities are conducted.
Similar actions were taken in Nuzividu and Agiripalli mandals of Eluru district, where police used tractors to destroy the prepared arenas. Authorities warned the organizers that no permission would be granted for cockfights. In Ambedkar Konaseema district’s Amalapuram mandal, police carried out similar operations, destroying the cockfight arenas using tractors.
Despite the crackdown, organizers had set up arenas in anticipation of receiving permission to conduct cockfights for three days during Sankranti. However, police have been acting swiftly, dismantling the arenas upon receiving any information about ongoing preparations.
