India's Qualification Chances for the WTC Final Explained
South Africa has secured its maiden spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. On Sunday, the Proteas clinched a thrilling two-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first Test of a two-match series held in Centurion. With this win, South Africa currently tops the WTC points table with 66.67 points.
Australia follows in second place with 58.89 points, India is in third with 55.88 points, New Zealand is fourth with 48.21 points, and Sri Lanka stands fifth with 45.45 points. While South Africa's place in the final is confirmed, Australia and India are now in fierce competition for the second spot to face them.
India’s Path to the WTC Final
For India to qualify for the WTC final, specific scenarios need to unfold.
In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, India must avoid losing even a single match. Ideally, the current Test in Melbourne should end in a draw, and India must win the fifth Test in Sydney.
Additionally, Sri Lanka needs to win their two-match series against Australia with a 0-1 margin.
Alternatively, if the Border-Gavaskar Trophy concludes in a 2-2 draw, India can still qualify, provided Australia does not win a single match in their series against Sri Lanka.
