Indian Citizens Rank Second in Acquiring US Citizenship

The number of Indian nationals obtaining US citizenship is steadily rising. According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) data for the 2024 fiscal year, 49,700 Indians became US citizens, accounting for 6.1% of all naturalizations. This places India in the second position, following Mexico, which leads with 13.1%. The Philippines, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam round out the top five, collectively contributing to 33% of all newly naturalized citizens.

USCIS data reveals that 70% of Indians who acquired US citizenship in 2024 reside in just ten states: California, Florida, New York, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Washington.

Most Indians obtaining citizenship did so through family-sponsored or employment-based immigration categories. Others included individuals admitted as refugees or through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.

In comparison, data from the Congressional Research Service (CRS) indicates that in 2022, 65,960 Indians obtained US citizenship. During the same period, 128,878 Mexicans, 53,413 Filipinos, and 46,913 Cubans also became US citizens. Notably, the Indian-American population in the United States is projected to surpass five million by 2024, reflecting the growing presence of Indians in the country.
