Doctor’s Family Claims Hospital Concealed Death to Demand Extra Fees
Do you remember the scene from the movie Tagore where a multi-specialty hospital continues treatment for a deceased patient to extort money from the family? A similar incident has unfolded in Madhapur, Hyderabad. Doctors reportedly continued treating a patient who had passed away on Tuesday night, demanding additional payment on Wednesday morning. After already paying ₹3 lakhs, the family was coerced into paying an additional ₹1 lakh with threats of stopping treatment. Soon after receiving the payment, the hospital staff informed the family that the patient had passed away and handed over the body.
Tragically, the deceased in this case was a doctor herself. According to the victim’s family, Dr. Nagapriya, a junior doctor from Hyderabad, had been admitted to a private hospital in Madhapur after falling ill. By Tuesday, the family had already paid ₹3 lakh towards advance fees, medications, and diagnostic tests. On Tuesday night, Nagapriya’s condition worsened, and she passed away. However, the doctors concealed this information and acted as though treatment was ongoing.
On Wednesday morning, the hospital demanded an additional ₹1 lakh, threatening to stop treatment otherwise. Under pressure, Nagapriya’s family managed to pay the requested amount. Only after receiving the payment did the doctors inform the family that they were unable to save her and released the body. Enraged, Nagapriya's family staged a protest outside the hospital, accusing the staff of hiding her death to extract more money.
