Bhadrachalam (Telangana): In the wake of heavy rains, the Godavari river is in spate and for the first time in 36 years, the flood water is flowing beyond a record level of 70 feet. The water level of Godavari crossed 70 feet at Bhadrachalam on Friday around 2.30 pm.

Meanwhile, the water level of Godavari crossed 70 feet only three times in the last 50 years. Currently, 24 lakh cusecs of flood water are flowing into the Godavari. With this, the authorities have declared the Bhadrachalam Godavari embankment a danger zone.

Many colonies in Bhadrachalam have already been submerged. Flood water entered the houses in the Ram temple area. In all, 2,000 families were moved to the rehabilitation centres. Meanwhile, officials have warned the people of Godavari catchment areas to be alert.

The Godavari and its tributaries Pranahita, Indravati, Sabari and Kademvaagu are overflowing due to heavy rains in upper riparian states Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. As a result, Godavari is brimming with flood water.

The gates of nine projects from the Sriramsagar project to Dhavaleswaram were completely lifted due to the flood. Also, the Godavari flood inundated Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati barrages, which are an integral part of the Kaleshwaram project.
