Fidel Castro's 'sisterly' ties with Indira Gandhi

NEW DELHI: The Cuban revolutionary icon Fidel Castro who died today after suffering a long battle with illness, will be remembered in India for his close relation with the Gandhi-Nehru family. Particularly his 'sisterly' ties with Indira Gandhi. In 1983, Castro as the head of Cuban delegation attended Seventh Non-Aligned Summit in New Delhi. Here an interesting thing happened. At the inauguration he gave a bear hug to his 'sister' Indira Gandhi to seal the friendly relations between the two countries. Castro suppose to pass the conference gavel to PM Indira and both the leaders rose from behind the dais, several hundreds of delegates including observers, media persons watching the event. Mrs.Indira extended her arm to receive the wooden gavel but Fidel didn't reciprocate. She attempted again but Castro kept smiling mysteriously. In third attempt surprising the former Indian PM he gave a bear hug before parting the wooden gavel. Entire hall broke into applause. That was Fidel Castro's last visit to India.
