YS Sharmila Slams BJP Over Jamili Election Bills
Andhra Pradesh Congress Chief YS Sharmila criticized the introduction of the Jamili Election Bills in Parliament, accusing the BJP of undermining the Indian Constitution. She alleged that the ruling party seeks to replace the Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar with its own version.
YS Sharmila asserted that introducing constitutionally questionable bills despite lacking a parliamentary majority highlights the BJP’s authoritarian approach. She emphasized that tying assembly tenures to the Lok Sabha term is inappropriate and unconstitutional.
Declaring the Jamili Bill as contrary to federal principles, YS Sharmila reaffirmed the Congress party’s opposition to it. She pointed out that the BJP lacks the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments, as evidenced by the Lok Sabha vote.
Questioning the rationale behind linking state and central government terms, she remarked, “If the central government falls, why should state governments also collapse? What sense does this make?”
YS Sharmila concluded by stating that the Congress party will not support any attempt to breach the constitutional framework through the Jamili Bill.
