CJI recommends U U Lalit as his successor, NV Ramana to demit office on Aug 26

Delhi, August 4: The office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana wrote a letter to the Law Ministry on Thursday recommending Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as next CJI. Lalit is next in seniority to Ramana and his tenure is less than three months.
 
The Ministry of Law sent a communication to the CJI to initiate proceedings of appointing his next successor as he is scheduled to demit office on August 26. It is a convention to recommend the name of the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court for CJI. 
 
Justice Lalit was appointed as a judge of the apex court in 2014. Prior to that, he was senior advocate at the top court. His father Justice U R Lalit had served as judge of the Delhi High Court. After retirement of Justice Lait on November 8, Justice DY Chandrachud will be appointed as the CJI. His tenure will be two years.
