Three CJIs for SC in 2022, N.V. Ramana to retire from service on Aug 26

In a span of 76 days, three Chief Justices will serve the Supreme Court in 2022. The present CJI N.V. Ramana would retire from service on August 26. Justice U.U. Lalit will succeed him. However, his tenure is only little over two months. After the retirement of Lalit on November 8, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud will become the CJI and he will remain in office for the next two years.

After 1950 and 1991, the apex court will see three CJIs in 2022. In 1991, three CJIs had served the top court. With the retirement of Justice Ranganath Mishra as CJI on November 24, Justice Kamal Narain Singh had succeeded his post. But he was CJI for only 17 days. Justice M H Kania took over as CJI after Kamal

Based on the seniority, the CJIs are appointed for the Supreme Court. There is a demand from legal fraternity that a term of a CJI should be fixed three years irrespective of age.
