Major Investment for Telangana: Electric Vehicle Giant BYD Proposes Unit Setup

China-based electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is reportedly preparing to establish a factory in Hyderabad. According to available information, ongoing discussions between BYD and the government have yielded positive results. The government has assured BYD of complete support for setting up its unit, including the allocation of necessary land.

The government has proposed three locations within Hyderabad for the unit, which are currently being evaluated by representatives from BYD. Once a site is selected, a formal agreement with the government is expected to follow. If this project materializes, it would mark one of the largest private-sector investments in the electric vehicle segment in India, bringing significant industrial recognition to Telangana.

Should BYD set up its plant in Hyderabad, several ancillary industries are also expected to emerge, potentially creating substantial employment opportunities.

Currently, BYD imports vehicles from China and sells them in India. Due to high import duties, the prices of these vehicles remain elevated, which has affected sales. Establishing a manufacturing facility in Hyderabad is anticipated to reduce vehicle costs.

While Tesla’s sales are reportedly declining in China and European countries, BYD’s sales are said to be increasing. The company recently launched a one-megawatt flash charger capable of fully charging a car battery within five to eight minutes. This allows the vehicle to travel up to 400 kilometers on a single charge.

In addition to its car manufacturing unit, BYD is also considering the establishment of a 20-gigawatt battery plant.
