Indian Government Responds to New Virus Outbreak in China

The Indian Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has addressed concerns regarding the emergence of a new virus in China, which has reportedly led to a surge in hospital visits by Chinese citizens. Media reports suggesting widespread public anxiety have drawn global attention. However, DGHS has assured that the situation does not currently warrant panic.

Speaking on the matter, Dr. Atul Goel, a senior official at DGHS, clarified that there is no immediate cause for fear regarding the spread of the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) reported in China. He emphasized the importance of taking necessary precautions against respiratory infections without succumbing to unnecessary worry.

Dr. Goel explained that while reports suggest the virus is causing concern in China, hMPV is similar to other common respiratory viruses that typically lead to mild cold symptoms. He noted that the virus mainly affects children and the elderly, displaying flu-like symptoms.

Further, he mentioned that data on respiratory infections in India has been analyzed up to December, and no significant changes or alarming trends have been observed. Dr. Goel added that respiratory infections tend to rise during winter, urging hospitals to ensure adequate facilities and beds are available to handle any potential increase in cases.

He advised the public to follow general precautions to prevent respiratory infections. "People should avoid close contact with those showing symptoms of cough and cold," he said. "Covering one’s mouth while coughing or sneezing and taking appropriate medication for common cold or fever is essential to limit the spread of infections."
