Border-Gavaskar Trophy: India Faces Setback Ahead of Decisive Sydney Test

The final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia is set to begin tomorrow (Friday) in Sydney. After four matches, the visiting Australian team holds a 2-1 lead in the series. For India, a victory in the final match would level the series, while any other result—whether a draw or a cancellation—would see the series awarded to Australia. Under these high stakes, Team India must field its strongest lineup.

In a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Team India coach Gautam Gambhir delivered disappointing news, revealing that pacer Akash Deep will be unavailable for the Sydney Test due to a back injury. Gambhir stated that the final playing XI would be decided after assessing the pitch.

This development poses a setback for India ahead of the crucial match. Akash Deep, who played in the Brisbane and Melbourne Tests, took five wickets across both matches. Despite some missed catches by fielders off his bowling, he showed potential for more dismissals.

Over the two Tests, Akash Deep bowled a total of 87.5 overs, which may have contributed to his back strain. Australian conditions, known for their rigorous demands, often lead to injuries such as knee, ankle, or back issues for players.

In Akash Deep's absence, either Harshit Rana or Prasidh Krishna is likely to replace him in the final XI, according to team sources.
